Staircase Expert Tips
1
The Golden Rule (Riser + Tread)
A standard architectural rule of thumb is: (2 x Riser) + Tread should equal between 24 and 25 inches (610-635mm) for a comfortable stride.
2
Riser Count vs Tread Count
Because the top floor acts as the final step, you will always have exactly one less tread than you have risers (Treads = Risers - 1).
3
Headroom
Don't just calculate steps! Make sure you have at least 6 feet 8 inches (2032mm) of vertical clearance above the nosing of every tread to prevent bumping heads.
